Reflection #1 04/28/14

Specific words or phrases I used that show I demonstrated good writer’s voice is I gave my predictions. I used words such as “I personally” which shows what I was thinking. I also gave my input and what I thought was going on. I showed this by saying that I personally don’t think there is such thing as a utopian society. These things showcase that when I’m reading I am always thinking. I think about my opinions and what will happen further on in the book. It shows my thought process as a reader and what I thought the author intended.

Some of the syntax I used while writing was the length of the sentences. I explained myself in a lot of details throughout writing this post. I wrote what I thought and explained my thought process. Diction I used was putting utopian in quotations because to some people it might be utopian but then to others it may not be. It just depends on your perspective.

Chapters 14-20 (Divergent) 04/27/14

So far I really enjoy reading divergent. I wish I had more time to read it so I could finish it and find out what happens to all the divergent. I think they will be outlawed and the government will try to kill them. This is a good example of a 'Utopian' society. But it’s not really Utopian considering a lot of stuff is going wrong. I personally don’t think there is ever going to be a Utopian society because there will always be something that goes wrong and there will never be a 'perfect' world.

When I get further on in the book I expect there to be much more obstacles. Such as trying to hide and not be a divergent. But I don’t think they will be able to hide. I think the government will find out sooner or later. I don't know how they are going to find out, maybe a lie detector or some futuristic object. Once they do find out I think all the divergent will get together and try to stop them. I look forward to seeing if my predictions are true.

Krista Ramsey 04/20/14

This is a summary of Locking into the magic of Legos. The article I chose is about how children will never get tired of Legos. Legos will still be used after every generation that passes, because it entertains children. "Like sparklers and hugs, Legos are things a child can never have enough of.” This shows that Legos will never get tired of and kids won’t ever get enough of them. Kids will always want to play with them.

It impacted because it tells us kids will never get tired of them and they will not be used, and how they are loved by kids. It will always be a part of their childhood. Some obseverastions is child is used more than once which gets the point across that its children who will always love Legos.

There are short paragraphs, some shorter than others and some longer than others in, so it was easier than one big chunk, all three columns that I read.  She also included some questions for the reader to ponder.

Have you always wanted to be a writer for columns, or at one point did you want to write novels? What did you major during college, and did you have an internship? If you were not a writer for columns, what do you think you’d be doing today instead? Where do your columns come from, experiences, thoughts, etc.?

Chapters 11-14 (Divergent) 04/15/14

Tris is scared someone is going to find out that she is divergent. So far she is having trouble fitting into Dauntless, she is having trouble fighting people. Since in her old faction that is not what they were to do. Four notices that she is having trouble and helps her on how to fight. The next night they go to play capture the flag, tris gets a lot of credit for finding the flag. Also she is becoming more and more dauntless since she sacrificed her life.  Which was very dauntless.

In chapter 13 they gave a very good description on how the scene with Eric, Al, Tris and Four happened. i could imagine Al not being able to throw the knife and hit the target. Then him being too afraid to stand in front of the target because four yelled at him.  I could also see Tris stepping in front since she needed more points. But i think somehow Tris will lose the points in the future.

this is a picture from the movie of tris getting hit in the ear:

Chapters 5-11 (Divergent) 04/13/14

For this book i noticed all the words Veronica Roth noticed. i hadnt hear of a lot of these words. such as homogeneity which means the quality or state of being the same kind, which was talking about divergents in this context. also the word precipice which is a very tall hill. so it was talking about the choosing ceremony how all the i initiates are on the precipice because they are about to choose their whole life practically.

i think what will happen next is Tris will have a hard time in dauntless and might not make it. i think tris may become factionless for some part in this book. but either her mom and dad will take her back in their faction. Or dauntless may re-think it and put her back in.

Chapters 1-5 (Divergent) 04/06/14

For this independent reading I chose to read Divergent by Veronica Roth. This book is about a utopian society, people are spilt up into factions and you get to choose which faction you get put into based off of your test results. But there are some people that are called divergent because they fit into multiple factions. These people are a threat to the government and the government is trying to kill them. Tris chose a faction called Dauntless, which are brave and fearless people, she left her family.

For this blog I read the first couple of chapters. It basically gave an overview of the whole story and explained what it was about. It also introduced the fact that Beatrice/ Tris was a divergent. This book has very good detail and similes. I felt like I was in the book, and I could imagine the scenes and what it is like. Some examples of this are, “He has my father's dark hair and hooked nose and my mother's green eyes and dimpled cheeks."(page 3) which is describing the way her brother, Caleb looks. Another example is, "... unmade bed and a stack of books on his desk." which is a description of Caleb's room.

What I think will happen is the government will do something to try and outlaw all the divergents. Maybe get them alone somehow and kill them. But I then think divergents will be able to beat the government, considering they are special and out power them because they are all factions combined. I think Tris’ parents will disown her and not want anything to do with her, or help her because she switched factions.

For this I got a picture of what I thought the dauntless place looked like:
